Six Californians start a club to discuss the works of Jane Austen, only to find their relationships -- both old and new -- begin to resemble 21st century versions of her novels. In Northanger Abbey, Jane Austen professes, "Friendship is certainly the finest balm for the pangs of disappointed love." Those words echo throughout writer-director Robin Swicord's adaptation of Karen Joy Fowler's bestseller, that contrasts the romantic dalliances of five unfulfilled California women with those of Austen's most celebrated and spirited literary heroines. United in the face of thwarted desire and outrageous misfortune, the protagonists realise that sisterly solidarity can overcome all any heartbreak, including infidelity and bereavement.
